Prof. Dr. Roland Bol is a Senior Scientist at the Institute of Bio- and Geosciences (IBG-3), Forschungszentrum Jülich (Jülich Research Centre) in Germany. He also holds a professorship at Bangor University, UK, and serves as a Guest Chair Professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. From 1995 to 2012, he worked at Rothamsted Research (North Wyke Farm) in the UK as a Senior Research Scientist, Principal Investigator, and Science Leader. He was awarded the Royal Society Millennium Fellowship Award (1999) and the Karl Eugen Habfast Foundation Isotope Award (Germany, 2003). On 22 October 2003, he received personal recognition from the UK Prime Minister Tony Blair for his outstanding contributions to environmental and sustainability research.
Professor Bol's research primarily focuses on the complex biogeochemical processes occurring at the landscape scale at the soil–water–air interface in natural and agricultural ecosystems, with a particular emphasis on understanding how isotopic signatures can be used as tracers for carbon, nutrients, and sediments in the environment. He is ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide, with an H-index of 86, over 605 published SCI papers, and more than 29,000 total citations. He serves as Editor-in-Chief or Associate Editor for six top-ranked journals in soil science, including the European Journal of Soil Science, and holds significant international influence in the field of soil science.
